Join the Southern Maine Volkssport Association (SMVA), Freeport Historical Society, and Freeport Hampton Inn for a 5 km (3.1 miles), or 10 km (6.2 miles) volkswalk on Saturday, January 1, 2011, starting at 10:00am at the Freeport Hampton Inn, 194 Lower Main St. (next to Shaw’s). The volkswalk is free, open to the public, and will be held rain or shine. There is no pre-registration. We will meet in the lobby of the Freeport Hampton Inn at 10:00am.
Start off the New Year with a walk through the beautiful Freeport Village. While Freeport is known for its upscale outlet shopping and home to the world-famous L.L. Bean outdoor store, there is much more to see on this walk. The 10 km self-guided route passes many historical sites on the Freeport Heritage Trail, including the Harrington House, home of the Freeport Historical Society; Jameson Tavern, where colonists debated the separation from Massachusetts; B.H. Bartol Library; Gore House, home of a truly unique McDonald’s Restaurant; plus much more.
The Freeport Hampton Inn is offering a discounted lodging rate to volkswalkers. If you plan to stay, let the registration desk know you are doing the volkswalk. To make a reservation, call (207) 865-1400. www.freeportme.hamptoninn.com.
Because it is a holiday, the Freeport Historical Society will be closed on New Year’s Day. Check out its web-site and plan to visit the next time you are in Freeport. www.freeporthistoricalsociety.org
