Community Ideas and Input on 2010 Public Programs and Exhibits
In 2010, Freeport Historical Society is planning a year-long series of programs and exhibits entitled, “Freeport‘s Amusements, Entertainments and Oddities.”
We invite Freeporter’s to participate in shaping these programs and exhibits by sharing stories of events and people that relate to this broad topic. We would also like to hear from you if you have items related to the theme that you would be willing to loan to us for the public exhibit.
Do you recall time spent at the Nordica Movie Theater and Bowling Alley? Are there family stories about social gatherings at church in other community settings? Did you shop for slippers at the store whose owners erected the now-famous “Big Indian”? What about Freeport‘s popular town baseball team? What did you do for fun when you were a child, or teen? Have you heard family stories about traveling vaudeville shows, circuses, et cetera that visited Freeport? What radio programs did Freeporter’s listen to before the advent of television?
We plan to include Casco Castle, the Desert of Maine, and other famous Freeport places through the display of items such as posters, tickets, and other memorabilia.
What other places should be included on our list?
We’d love to hear from you in any way most convenient for you.You can come and visit us at Harrington House, M-F, 8:30am-5:00pm. We can easily arrange weekend hours, too. If you’d rather talk on the phone we can be reached at 865-3170 (or leave us your number and we will call you.) Email is also a good way to reach us: director@freeporthistoricalsociety.org. We are also happy to come and visit you through a convenient appointment.
Long stories, tiny remembrances-they are all welcomed!
Thank you for sharing your stories so that we can share them with all Freeporter’s and visitors!
Freeport Historical Society’s mission is to advocate, research, collect and share the history and stories of Freeport, Maine.
