Davis Foundation Funds Archaeology Survey at Pettengill Farm

Freeport Historical Society has been awarded a $5000 grant from the Davis Family Foundation to conduct a Phase 1 Archaeological excavation around the area of the privy/tool shed at Pettengill Farm, the society’s nineteenth-century salt water farm on the Harraseeket River.
From August 3rd-7th, Historical Archaeologist Norman L. Buttrick and his team will be doing field work on-site. Privies and other areas where everyday items were frequently discarded are known to be rich sources of material culture. This work is being undertaken to further illuminate the lives of those who lived on the farm and to provide a guide for the replacement of the privy/tool shed structure(s).
Freeport Historical Society (FHS) members who are interested in observing or participating in this “dig” need to register with Vanessa Rodriguez at the FHS office (865-3170) 45 Main Street. Members are invited from 9:00am-noon or 1:00pm-4:00pm from Tuesday August 4th through the 7th. Members may register for one or more day segments.
During each period the total number of observers/participants allowed on site will be limited to 15 so that work can proceed on-time and in an orderly fashion. For those who are actively participating, professional archaeological techniques will be shared. Please register early to avoid disappointment!
