Freeport Student Trail Signage Project to be unveiled on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 5th
Forty-nine young people from Freeport Middle School and Mast Landing School have created artwork for new trail signage at Pettengill Farm which will be unveiled on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 5th at 1pm. Lemonade and cupcakes will be served and trail maps featuring the signage locations will be available.
“The participating students have created lively, beautiful depictions of the flora, fauna and social history of Pettengill Farm and the Harraseeket area. They utilized the book Tides of Change, among other references for their work”, stated Freeport Historical Society Director, Christina White.
“We collaborated with schools on this project as a means of introducing and encouraging children and their families to explore the outdoors at Pettengill and learn more about this beautiful, historic site. The project also provides a more clearly identified trail by utilizing markers,” White said.
Leading the project were FHS Trustees, Michelle Broderick and Jen Morrissey. With the support of school principals, Beth Wilhoite and Ray Grogan, teachers Jessie Hallowell, Susan Gosselin, Jon Amory, and Crystal Boucher worked with their students to create the art and design and build the sign tops.
Hancock Lumber and Freeport Hardware contributed the materials and funds for the thirty-three signs. Volunteers from BNAS and Freeport Rotary will install the signage.
Located on Pettengill Road off of Flying Point Road in Freeport, Pettengill Farm is open to the public everyday of the year, dawn to dusk. Park at the gate and take the leisurely 12 minute walk onto the farm grounds.
Freeport Historical Society, owner of the property, encourages a number of passive uses of the property including birdwatching, kite-flying, walking, sketching, photography, picnicking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
