Professor Thomas Hubka, author of “Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn”, keynote speaker at FHS’ Annual Meeting, Thursday, May 27th

The public is invited to Freeport Historical Society’s (FHS) forty-first Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 27thfrom 7:00p-9:00p at Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot Street.

“We are excited to have Dr. Thomas Hubka, Professor of Architecture at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and author of the book, Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn, joining us as our keynote speaker,” stated FHS Director, Christina White.

Professor Hubka has taught architecture at the University of Wisconsin−Milwaukee for over twenty years and the University of Oregon for fifteen years. He has published widely on topics of popular, vernacular architecture including theoretical works and detailed studies of common buildings such as New England farms, bungalows, ranch houses, and workers’ cottages. His overall scholarly work has been recognized by the University of Wisconsin−Milwaukee through the receipt of the 2007 Graduate School/UWM Foundation Research Award. Recently he has received the 2009-2010 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Distinguished Professor Award.

Hubka has written a standard work of New England farm/architectural history: Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England (The University Press of New England) for which he received the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award in 1984 for the best book in American vernacular architecture.

Professor Hubka will focus his presentation on vernacular architecture in New England, and its relevance to Freeport properties including Harrington House and Pettengill Farm.

Preceding Dr. Hubka’s presentation will be a brief FHS business meeting, followed by our Annual Awards program.

The Mel Collins Award, given for exemplary community service, will be presented as will our Annual Preservation Award. In addition, we’ll recognize our many generous volunteers.

Beverages and sweets will be available. Come early and take on the challenge of our cross word puzzle.
